International Summer School "Valuing Cultural Diversity in Cities: Challenges to Cultural Economics"4-8 September 2009Island of Procida, Italy
The International Summer School develops from the previous SUS.DIV research and training experiences held in San Sebastian (July 2008) and in Mysore (January 2009). The event is targeted to PhD researchers and postgraduate students who have an interest in the economic dimension of cultural diversity. It aims to create awareness of the challenges involved in multidisciplinary research focusing on cultural diversity and discuss the response that cultural economics discipline can give to economic valuation issues brought by this concept. The International Summer School is organised into “training” and “symposium” components. The main training part covers the first 3 days, whilst the symposium takes place in the last 2 days. During the first part, PhD researchers and postgraduate students will be introduced to the concepts of cultural diversity and sustainable development, and the available cultural economics valuation methods to assess diversity. The second part, the international symposium, will see the participation of world experts on cultural economics, regional science and conservation of tangible and intangible heritage. Cities are the place where diverse identities come into contact. These identities find their expression in form of tangible and intangible heritage. Such cultural diversity in a city needs to be preserved, since it ensures the resilience of the “system city”. The symposium will aim to discuss the above issues within the cultural economics perspective. It is organized into 4 main sessions: cultural diversity and challenges to cultural economics; the economic value of tangibles: cultural diversity and heritage in cities; the economic value of intangible: the case of languages; best practices in conservation. The International Summer School is organised by the University of Nottingham and SUS.DIV in collaboration with: “Federico II” University of Naples (Department of Conservation of Architectural and Environmental Assets)Istituto Universitario Orientale, Naples
